Self-harm and self-injury

  • Self-harm is when people deliberately hurt their bodies.
  • People sometimes self-harm as a way to cope with strong physical or emotional pain and distress.
  • For some, it happens once, but for others it can happen many times or become a repeated behaviour.
  • Self-harming behaviour is treatable.
  • If a person is self-harming, it doesn’t always mean they’re thinking about suicide.
